Artwork created by Expecting Something families unveiled at Fife Exhibition
A piece of art created by seven children aged between 4 months and 4 years with their parents is unveiled today at an exhibition in Glenrothes.
The children braved windy, wet weather to create the 1.3m x 1.8m canvas outdoors in the Lochgelly Centre’s garden using paint filled eggs, paint sticks, powders, prints, collage and pendulum art.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, adults were required to social distance, whilst the younger members of the group contributed together. Each family also contributed to the artwork in their family units. The marks left by one family were a starting point for another.
The exhibition at OnFife’s Rothes Halls, a Visit Scotland initiative, is a celebration of Scotland’s coast and waters and this contribution from children and families at Expecting Something shines a light on the incredible creativity of young children.
Starcatchers artist Marion Geoffray, said: “This project was an opportunity for young children, with their parents, to express themselves creatively and to connect through art, as well as being a very sensory, messy but joyful experience for all.
“Despite restrictions and social distancing measures, this collective artwork shows how their lives weave with one another. The canvas was made from scratch and we used different materials and techniques to experiment with: paint throwing, paper collage, sprays, fabric weaving, markers, water, bath drops, brushes, chalks and more.”
Expecting Something works with new and expectant parents under 25 and their wee ones aged 0-2 years in Lochgelly, Fife, providing a weekly safe space to spend time with their babies and peers whilst engaging in artist-led creative activities. Creating this art piece was also an opportunity to connect with previous members of the group, inviting them & their wee ones aged 3+ to contribute to the piece.
