Never too young to be a sculptor…

“Taking part in artistic and creative activities together is protected time for parents and their children… Quite often you’ll find that adults are surprised by what their children are capable of.” 

They may not yet be 3 but armed with natural materials foraged from the beautiful grounds of Jupiter Artland and a little help from their parents, these little ones have created some fascinating sculptures. 

The children, from Starcatchers’ community engagement project Expecting Something, are Jupiter Artland’s youngest participants of a creative sculpture workshop inspired by the work of sculptor, photographer and environmentalist Andy Goldsworthy. 

They are taking part through Jupiter Artland’s Free Learning Programme for community groups. The session began with foraging for natural materials before working together in the studio to create some 3D artwork! 

Kerry Cleland, Starcatchers’ Expecting Something Project Coordinator, said: “Taking part in artistic and creative activities together is protected time for parents and their children, when they can really focus on being together, strengthening relationships and encouraging deeper bonds.  

“Quite often you’ll find that adults are surprised by what their children are capable of. They see their child in a completely new light!” 

Matt Searles, Jupiter Artland’s Senior Learning Coordinator, said: “We adapted this session so that it was age appropriate, really focusing in on enabling collaboration, sharing a
nd trying to ensure that both the child and parent had equal input as the work took shape. 

“Our Free Learning activities seek to reengage and strengthen the connections we have with each other, the environment and ultimately ourselves through the act of creative making and thinking.”
