Sprog Rock was created by Katy Wilson during her residency at Tramway as part of Starcatchers’ Inspire Project 2009 – 2011.

Sprog Rock brought together a range of musicians who hadn’t created or worked with this age group before. They played music not created specifically for the event, but some of their own work which they thought would be appropriate for the audience. The music was accompanied by animations projected onto the walls.

The Sprog Rock 2017 Tour

The Sprog Rock 2017 Tour was an interactive live music experience for Early Years aged children and their parents and carers. Originally developed as part of Katy Wilson’s Starcatchers Residency at Tramway in 2010, Sprog Rock has evolved over the last 7 years to become an innovative live gig experience for our youngest children.

In 2017 Starcatchers, in partnership with the Sprog Rock team secured funding from the Youth Music Initiative Fund to deliver a new Sprog Rock project in the Autumn of that year.

The project saw the Sprog Rock band work in nursery settings in 4 partner communities – in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Inverclyde and Stirling – supporting the children in the settings to create new music that the band incorporated into their sets. There were also Sprog Rock gigs in each of the communities that the children and their parents attended at the end of their workshop blocks, together with the public.

Sprog Rock toured to 4 venues in the 4 communities that they visited, performing songs created during the nursery visits:

Beacon Arts Centre | 30th September 2017 | 11:30 & 14:30

Macrobert Arts Centre | 7th – 8th October 2017 | 11:30 & 14:30

Platform, Glasgow | 21st – 22nd October 2017 | 10:30

LYRA, Craigmillar | 4th November 2017 | 12:30 & 14:00

Sprog Rock is designed to push the ideas of what is of interest to young children – and what they are capable of creating.
