5 Ways With… is a series that gives you a whole week of ideas with one resource! This time we’re focusing on cornflour.

  1. 1: Ooblek

(2 cups cornflour, 1 cup water) – it should be runny, but go hard when squeezed. Great for sensory play – add utensils, cups or involve your whole bodies. Drop food colouring on the surface and swirl to make gorgeous patterns and mix colours.

  2. 2: Colour bombs

Dry out your ooblek and create (dry out coloured ooblek in low oven, crush to fine powder in blender) – great outdoor art activity – mix powders in cups, clap to make coloured clouds, throw onto clothes or make colour patterns on the ground – all non-toxic and washable.

  3. 3: Chalk paint

(Cornflour, water and food colouring) another great gross motor, outdoor art experience that will brush away when dry (or wash away with enough rain) – use old ketchup bottles to squeeze designs, “write” names, spin around and dance!

  4. 4: Cloud dough

(Cornflour, water and food colouring) another great gross motor, outdoor art experience that will brush away when dry (or wash away with enough rain) – use old ketchup bottles to squeeze designs, “write” names, spin around and dance!

  5. 5: Kinetic sand

(1 cup sand, 1/2 cup cornflour, oil to bring it together) – squeezable, mouldable sand that doesn’t dry out – for wee ones that put everything in their mouths you can swap sand for polenta.
