Wee Inspirations

ISLAND beats

  1. The Basic Idea

During the show, we used rhythm to capture the wee one’s attention. Why not explore this at home? A pot and spoon, a tub and stick, body percussion, or music with a strong beat can all spark their curiosity. Your wee one will love exploring rhythm with you.

  2. Over To You, Wee One

Your wee one will probably just enjoy making a lot of noise at first. Don’t stress if they don’t join you tapping, just being an example for them is enough. Top tip: take your beats outside if you can

  3. Cheeky Bonuses

    • Agency
    • Bonding
    • The stress relief and joy of getting to bash something
    • Exploring cause and effect
  4. Variations

    • If your wee one is too young to make their own beats, simply lay them on the floor and tap out a rhythm nearby. They’ll feel the gentle vibrations and may enjoy kicking their legs along to the beat.
    • Hold your wee one and move to the beat so they can feel the rhythm through movement
  5. And Remember...

Babies and young children don’t need words to begin communicating, so embrace the playful chaos and watch how they respond. Over time, making beats together can start to feel like a conversation.
