Hup was created by Hazel Darwin-Clements and Abigail Sinar in association with the RSNO.

The concept for Hup was inspired by the delivery of the Arts and Business Scotland People Award-winning residency project Nickum, piloted by Starcatchers and the RSNO in 2013/2014. During the project, Starcatchers Associate Artist Hazel Darwin-Edwards and Composer Abigail Sinar worked in two childcare settings in Aberdeen over six months with babies aged birth – 18 months to explore how young children of this age respond to both classical music and live performance. Through this process they simultaneously developed a classical score and a new play for babies.

The original work was redeveloped in 2015, with fresh input from established Early Years director Xana Marwick and toured across Scotland during Spring 2015. Co-created by both Hazel and Abigail, Hup combines live classical music, with a heart warming storyline in a beautiful performance specially designed for very young children. In the theatrical performance, a trio of musicians perform the original score live intertwined with a non-verbal narrative which takes the audience on a journey in pursuit of the story’s lead character, a very inquisitive raccoon.

A constant flow of intriguing activity and enticing music… Hup delivers a frolicsome adventure in friendship and sharing the joys (and bushy tails) of a raccoon with a larky sense of humour and a love of nature.

One of the greatest pleasures of Xana Marwick’s show lies in watching the varying reactions of the young audience as the live music, composed by Abigail Sinar, moves between moods that range from playful to romantic” ★★★★

Both transfixing and mesmerising, this relaxed and intimate delight of a performance is full of surprises geared right at tiny tots but clever enough to draw in the adults in the room too as it magically links nature and music.

Hup – a perfectly tailored work for under-twos. The research and knowhow of pre-school theatre specialists Starcatchers and the talented musicians of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra have combined to give babies and toddlers a delicate introduction to classical music.
